Realism on the Wild Side

Fine Wildlife and Western Art

Steven and Karen Boyd have received high acclaim for the finely detailed realism in their wildlife and western art.  Although you can almost feel the smooth rippling curl of the ram's horn or taste the grit and dust billowing off the horses hooves, it is the harmony between the artists and their subject that reaches out and pulls you into their work ... and it doesn't let you go.

Inspired by the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, Steven and Karen create art work of vision and mystery.  While Steven works in permanent acrylic Gouche to execute the beginning of a painting, Karen follows with oil to compliment and enhance.  Thereby creating a collaboration that gives you a sense of Steven's raw power combined with Karen's gentle introspective study of their subject.

With Steven's credentials as a wildlife biologist, the couple frequently visits animal preserves and Yellowstone National Park to study their subjects in their natural environment.  "We do get out of the studio on what we call our field trips," explains Karen.  "We live only 45 minutes from Yellowstone and it is where we go and take photos, watch the animals and gather information.

Because of his background in wildlife biology, Steven has an acute sense of animal structure and seasonal habits.  Karen loves the outdoors and is always seeking ways to get the hands-on experience with the subjects they paint.  This combination was discovered accidentally, but has catapulted this couple to the forefront of the art world with their work being sought after by collectors and wildlife enthusiasts from across the country.
